1,409. Jun 12, 2002. #1. The article on my new KMG grinder is ready for public viewing. It is rather large, with lots of pics, so loading may be slow. However, it contains my impressions and thoughts on this machine, and I would suggest reading it if you are thinking of purchasing a new grinder.

The KMG is a fairly simple design, compact in size, but is possibly the most overbuilt grinder available. (all of which are things I very much like) The machine I ordered was the KMG-1, with the exception of having Rob custom build the platen.

If I leave a belt on my KMG with the tension applied, it can stretch unevenly and start to wobble a bit. BUT, it's so darned easy to take the tension off (just a 1/4 twist of a lever) I've learned not to do that.

Direct drive is the ONLY way to go WITH a VFD of course. If budget isn't an option then the NEMA 4X enclosure, otherwise a cheap Chinese VFD that are so easy to setup. With filters over air inlets they last for many years. For $70 or so even if they only lasted 4 or 5 yrs would still be cheap. The KMG has been a good basic grinder for many years.

The KMG was designed by Rob Frink to compete with all of them, and do so really inexpensively, while also being a platform which could be added to. He was active in the community, and a string of really innovative products sprang up (the rotary platen, for example).

The KMG Grinder downside is that it has only one slot for a tool arm so it doesn't accept really cool tool rests. Upside is that it is bulletproof and stable and with pulleys and a VFD it can use 1725 RPM motors which perform really well. Another downside for some is that it doesn't flip sideways.

I've had a few grinders where the drive and contact wheel are directly driven by the motor, and the motor is always in the way. The design I like is the KMG style, where there's a swappable tool arm, tension and tracking wheel, and a drive wheel.
