The later Enterprise Manufacturing Company was the first large-scale mill to use water power from the enlarged Augusta Canal. Its success signaled the emergence of Augusta as a manufacturing center. The mill still operates, showing the adaptability of 19th-century mills to modern machinery, and still (1977) uses canal water to power its hydroelectric plant.

Henry Cumming advanced the idea of manufacturing cotton goods locally. He proposed building a canal for waterpower following the example of Lowell, Massachusetts. Constructed in 1845, the Augusta Canal attracted flourmills, cotton mills, iron works, and other manufacturing establishments along its banks.

The mill has always used the water power of the Augusta Canal and now generates hydroelectric power. The King Mill operated the largest number of spindles under one roof in Augusta and was one of the largest cotton mills in the South.
