van norman milling machine

New to me Van Norman 3V. Added a Van Norman 3V to the arsenal a few weeks back. Finally getting it moved around in the shop. Still got to get it cleaned up, and the covers and stuff back on and hooked up but figured Id post a few pics real quick. I'll try to get some better ones later when I get a chance.

Van Norman moved from Waltham to Springfield Mass. around 1912 and the name changed from Waltham Watch Tool Co. to Van Norman. My mill is a Van Norman, Springfield, so it is post-1913. "Machinist Tools Made In America" - a catalog published by the National Machine Tool Builders Association in 1921 - includes the #2.

Check out Van Norman Milling Machine Homepage for some info. The model numbers chart says #12 uses 5V tooling which is no longer commercially available. I've made some, it's not too hard. I looked at a Van Norman mill last year. The asking price was reason enough to take a look. I was amazed at the size of the machine as I had only heard of B'port sized Van Normans. This machine, the only Van Norman I have ever looked at, was prolly the biggest of the Van Norman line.
