Help With Boring? : Machinists

The boring bar is 25mm in diameter so around 1" in diameter. I don't think it's carbide but I've had it cut harder materials at the same speeds/feeds and chipbreak beautifully. It's just this one material gets super stringy and struggles for some reason, it doesn't sound chattery at all and the finish is perfectly fine by the looks of things.

Request For An HSS Lathe Cutter Primer for Boring Bars ...

I'm interested in the geometry of the HSS cutters fitted to a boring bar. @mikey makes the case that the loads on a boring tool are rather different from those on a regular turning or facing tool. Unless I'm missing something, the pdf's in the 'models for grinding hss lathe tools' don't address bits for boring bars.

Solved: boring and boring bars on a lathe - Autodesk Community

So for boring bar having .5 " diameter and insert tip clearing that diameter by .015, it means that from centerline of the bar to cutting tip you have .265" distance, you double that value and you come up with .53 as minimum bore diameter meaning that shank of the bar will clear bore by .015 all around at smallest diameter bar is intended to cut.

Choosing the right boring tool | Cutting Tool Engineering

Unlike drills or reamers, single-edge boring bars have a single point of contact with the workpiece. As a result, the bar is unsupported, which sometimes leads to vibration, or chatter. Problems with chatter are the only significant drawback to these cutting tools. Steel bars tend to chatter once the axial DOC exceeds 4 diameters deep.

Advanced Tool Sharpening - Conrad Hoffman

Grinding lines should always be perpendicular to the cutting edge. If the lines are parallel to the edge, the edge will be more fragile. As an example, drill sharpening fixtures are usually shown set up on the horizontal centerline of the wheel, making the grinding lines parallel to the cutting edge.
