My Index Model 40 is a B&S #9 taper and I have not had a problem with "pulling loose". I would buy a set of new collets if I thought I needed them. A&D Machinery bought Wells-Index in 1987 and moved it to Muskegon, MI. Your model 40 shipped in June 1955. It shipped with a table power feed, 1/2 HP single phase motor and # 9 Brown and Sharpe spindle taper. The spindle/quill feed was an option that was not ordered on this mill.

I had some questions about my Well-Index mill and thought I would respond with a video showing some of the features of this machine.

I'm looking at a Index vertical mill, Ser. no. 645 12445, model 555 and 645. He has a good price on it, just wondering if its worth $1000. I have searched and have found some info, but I don't know if its a Well Index. It uses R8 collet.

The photos were horrible but I was able to determine that 1) it was an Index Model 645, 2) it came with a milling vise and a rotary table 3) it had a power feed. The seller didn't know much about the machine, so was unable to answer my questions about spindle taper, wear, etc. But he only wanted $700 for it.
